✨ What’s the Deal with MERV Ratings?
Let’s talk air filters—and why MERV ratings matter more than you might think!
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, but don’t let the fancy name fool you. It’s simply a scoring system that tells you how good an air filter is at trapping tiny particles floating around in the air. The higher the number, the better the filter is at catching the bad stuff.
🔍 Why It Matters
MERV ratings make it easier to compare filters side by side, helping you choose the right one for your home, office, or any other space where clean air counts. It’s a smart, straightforward way to measure filter performance—no guesswork needed.
📏 How It Works
Each filter gets a MERV score based on how well it captures particles ranging from 0.3 to 10 microns in size. That includes everything from dust and pollen to mold spores and even some bacteria.
📊 The Scale (1–16)
-
MERV 1–4: Basic protection – catches large particles like carpet fibers and dust mites.
-
MERV 5–8: Standard home use – blocks dust, mold, and pet dander.
-
MERV 9–12: Great for allergy relief – captures finer particles like exhaust fumes.
-
MERV 13–16: High-efficiency – used in hospitals and cleanrooms for ultra-clean air.
⚙️ A Quick Note About MRCOOL Systems
MRCOOL mini-split systems are low static pressure systems, which means they’re not designed to push air through highly restrictive filters. Using a high MERV-rated filter can significantly reduce airflow, causing your system to work harder than it should—or even malfunction.
To keep things running efficiently and avoid putting unnecessary strain on your system, we do not recommend using high MERV filters with your MRCOOL unit.
🛠 Have a Dusty Environment?
If you’re in a space with lots of dust or debris—like a woodshop, garage, or hobby space—you can still boost your air filtration without compromising your unit. Consider building a custom filtering box with lower MERV-rated pleated filters. This setup gives you extra protection without choking your system’s airflow.
📍 Where You’ll See MERV Ratings
From residential HVAC systems to schools, commercial buildings, and hospitals, MERV ratings help match the filter to the job. It’s all about choosing the right balance of filtration and performance.
