If you've recently unboxed your MRCOOL mini split and noticed that it came with just one black air freshener filter — even though there are clearly slots for two — you're not alone. We get this question a lot, and we're here to clear things up!

What Is the Black Filter For?

The black filter included with many MRCOOL mini split systems is an air freshener or deodorizing filter. Its job is to help reduce odors and freshen the air as it passes through your indoor unit. It’s different from your primary mesh filter, which traps dust and debris — the black filter adds a bonus layer of comfort to your indoor environment.

Why Is There Only One Filter Included?

While your MRCOOL air handler has space for two air freshener filters, only one is included in the box. That’s intentional! Here’s why:

• You only need one: A single air freshener filter is sufficient to provide the intended deodorizing effect for most indoor spaces.

• Balanced performance: The system is designed to operate optimally with just one of these filters installed. Adding a second one won’t hurt, but it’s not necessary.

• It’s an optional feature: The black filter is considered a bonus — not a required component of system operation. Your unit will run perfectly fine without it or with just one installed.

Can I Add a Second Filter?

Yes! If you'd like to maximize the air freshening effect, you’re welcome to purchase a second black air freshener filter. It’s a great option if:

• You want a more even distribution of freshened air

• You're using the unit in a high-traffic or musty space (like a basement, gym, or pet area)

Where Should I Install It?

The black filter can be placed in either of the two designated filter slots on the indoor unit. If you're using only one (as most people do), place it on the left-hand side when facing the unit for best airflow and coverage.
