While it may seem simple to move your DIY HVAC system from one location to another, we strongly advise against relocating your MRCOOL system once it’s been installed. That said, if you're considering the process, here’s a general overview of what’s involved—and why we recommend leaving it to the professionals.
⚠️ Important Notice
Relocating your MRCOOL system will void your warranty.
The warranty is only valid if the system is installed and remains at its original location, according to MRCOOL’s installation guidelines.
❗ Why We Don’t Recommend Moving Your System
Moving an installed HVAC system may lead to several issues, including:
-
System Damage: The condenser, air handler, and refrigerant lines are vulnerable to damage during removal or transport.
-
Refrigerant Compromise: Improper handling can lead to refrigerant loss or contamination, which would require a licensed HVAC professional to recharge or repair.
-
Operational Problems: Incorrect reinstallation can lead to poor performance or complete system failure.
-
Voided Warranty: Any relocation voids your system's warranty, leaving you responsible for all repairs and replacements.
🔧 If You Proceed: General Steps to Move the Condenser Unit
If you're aware of the risks and still choose to move your condenser, here’s a simplified outline of the steps involved:
-
Power the Unit Off
Shut down the condenser from the control system. -
Turn Off Power at the Breaker
Ensure the breaker supplying power to the unit is switched off to prevent any electrical hazard. -
Close All Refrigerant Valves
This includes the king valves and any other service valves on the unit to seal off the refrigerant inside. -
Disconnect the Line Set
Carefully disconnect the refrigerant lines. Be cautious not to bend or damage them. -
Prepare the New Location
Ensure the new site is level, secure, and properly ventilated. Make electrical and drain arrangements in advance. -
Reconnect Line Sets
When reconnecting, tighten all fittings fully until no threads are showing to avoid leaks. -
Open All Valves
Reopen the king valves and any other service valves you previously closed. -
Restore Power
Turn the breaker back on and power up the unit from the control system.
✅ Our Recommendation
If you're moving to a new home or changing the layout of your current one, the best solution is to purchase a new system. Not only does this maintain warranty protection, but it also ensures optimal system performance without risk to your existing investment.
Alternatively, consult a licensed HVAC professional if a move is unavoidable. They have the proper tools and training to evacuate refrigerant safely, handle reinstallation correctly, and ensure compliance with safety and efficiency standards.
