When it comes to MRCOOL mini-split systems, the Olympus and DIY lines are two of the most popular options. A common question that comes up is whether these two systems are compatible with each other. Technically, yes — they can be made to work together — but we do not recommend mixing systems unless absolutely necessary.

While the core technology behind the Olympus and DIY units is very similar, the main difference lies in how the refrigerant lines connect to the condenser and air handlers. DIY units come pre-equipped with quick-connect adapters, designed for easy, tool-free installation by homeowners. Olympus units, on the other hand, are built for standard professional installation, which uses traditional flared refrigerant connections.

If you are trying to connect an Olympus unit to a DIY condenser (or vice versa), the quick-connect adapters on the DIY lines must be removed. Once these adapters are taken off, a professional HVAC technician can properly flare the lines and connect them just like a standard mini-split system. It’s a straightforward process for a trained installer and ensures the system can function correctly.

Aside from the line connection method, everything else between the Olympus and DIY systems is effectively the same. Refrigerant type, control wiring, and general operation are consistent, making them fairly easy to integrate if needed.

Important Notes:
-
Mixing systems is not ideal because it goes against MRCOOL’s intended design for ease of installation.
-
Professional installation is a must when modifying the connections — DIY installation standards no longer apply once you start altering the line sets.
-
Proper flaring technique is critical to avoid leaks and ensure system longevity.

In conclusion, while it is possible to mix Olympus and DIY components by removing the adapters and properly flaring the lines, we highly recommend sticking to matched systems whenever possible to maintain warranty coverage, simplify installation, and guarantee the best performance.
