Overview
Ultraviolet (UV) lights can be used in HVAC systems to help reduce the growth of mold, bacteria, and other airborne contaminants. This article outlines best practices for placing UV lights in MRCOOL systems, including both ducted and ductless (mini-split) units.
Note: MRCOOL systems do not include built-in UV lights. Installation should always be performed by a licensed HVAC professional. Improper installation may damage system components or pose safety hazards.
🔧 Ducted MRCOOL Systems
Examples: Signature Series, Universal Series, Central Ducted Systems
Recommended UV Light Placement:
-
Return Air Duct or Plenum:
Installing the UV light in the return air section treats air before it reaches the evaporator coil, reducing microbial buildup. -
Near or Above the Evaporator Coil:
Placing the UV light directly above the coil helps prevent mold and bacteria from developing on coil surfaces, improving hygiene and airflow efficiency.
⚠️ Caution:
Ensure UV lights are not installed in a way that exposes plastic, electrical wiring, or other non-UV-rated materials to prolonged UV exposure.
🌀 Ductless MRCOOL Systems (Mini-Splits)
Examples: DIY Series, Olympus, Advantage Series
Recommended UV Light Placement:
-
Behind the Blower Wheel or Under the Front Panel:
For mini-split indoor air handler units, UV lights can be safely installed behind the blower wheel or beneath the front panel to effectively sterilize air and reduce mold growth on internal surfaces.
These placements allow the UV light to reach areas prone to moisture accumulation while minimizing direct exposure to components that could degrade under UV.
💡 Installation should be performed carefully to avoid interfering with the fan motor, control board, or airflow sensors.
Final Recommendation
MRCOOL systems are compatible with many third-party UV light kits when properly installed. Whether ducted or ductless, UV lighting can significantly enhance indoor air quality and help maintain a cleaner HVAC system. We strongly recommend consulting a licensed HVAC technician to ensure safe and effective installation.
⚠️ Reminder:
UV light additions are considered aftermarket modifications and are not covered under the MRCOOL product warranty.
