Important: MRCOOL mini split systems are not designed to purify or filter hazardous air, including smoke or particulate matter from wildfires. These systems do not provide air purification or protection from airborne pollutants.
Understanding How Your Mini Split Works
MRCOOL mini split systems are ductless HVAC units that recirculate indoor air to provide heating and cooling. They do not bring in outdoor air during standard operation, and they are not equipped with HEPA filters or smoke filtration technology.
This means that while the system may help maintain indoor temperature, it does not remove smoke, ash, or harmful particles from the air inside your home.
What Happens If You Run It During a Wildfire?
Air Handler (Indoor Unit):
-
Continues to recirculate indoor air.
-
May redistribute smoke or particulates already present in the home.
-
Built-in filters are designed for dust and debris—not for smoke or fine particulate matter (PM2.5).
-
Filter and internal components may require more frequent cleaning if indoor air quality is poor.
Outdoor Condenser Unit:
-
Exposed to outdoor conditions and may accumulate ash, soot, and fine debris.
-
Extended exposure may lead to clogged coils, reduced efficiency, or potential system wear over time.
-
Regular inspection and maintenance are recommended after prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke.
