When configuring the MRCOOL Universal Air Handler in a Horizontal Right position, it's essential to follow proper procedures to ensure a smooth installation. Below is a step-by-step guide to completing the horizontal right installation.
CAUTION:
Before proceeding, ensure the following safety precautions are taken:
- Power has been disconnected from the unit.
- The line-set has not been connected.
- Refrigerant has not been charged.
- All front panels of the unit have been removed.
- The electrical box cover has been removed.
- The clip holding the coil in place at the bottom front of the cabinet has been removed.
Overview of the Universal Air Handler Configuration
The MRCOOL Universal Air Handler is designed for flexibility. It comes factory-assembled for vertical and horizontal left installations. For horizontal right setups, you will need to modify the A-coil assembly, which includes:
- The coil.
- The bottom drain pan (where the coil mounts).
- A side drain pan (used for horizontal configurations).
- A metal frame that secures the bottom and side pans with four tabs.
Step-by-Step Procedure for Horizontal Right Configuration
-
Remove the Temperature Sensor Wire:
- Cut the zip ties securing the temperature sensor wire. The sensor is brazed to the coil and cannot be removed, so it must be disconnected from the main board.
- Locate the temperature sensor wire on the main board (refer to figure 1). Slide the lock tab backward, press the latch tab, and disconnect the wire.
- Gently pull the wire through the grommets between the electrical box and inner cabinet (figure 2).
- Secure the wire so it does not get damaged during the process.
-
Remove the A-Coil Assembly:
- Slide the A-coil assembly out of the air handler. If needed, refer to the "Remove A-Coil" section for more guidance.
- Unscrew the six screws attaching the A-coil to the pan (three on each side at the bottom).
- Carefully lift the A-coil off the bottom pan and set it aside.
-
Remove the Drain Pans:
- Bend out the four retention tabs securing the pans in the metal frame. There are two tabs on each side. Be cautious not to damage the foam on the edge of the pan.
- Lift the pans out of the frame. Slide the vertical pan off the base pan, rotate it, and slide it onto the opposite side. Do not rotate the base pan—the drains must always face the front as installed in the cabinet.
-
Reassemble the Pans and Coil:
- Slide the pans back into the base frame, ensuring the foam edges are not damaged.
- Bend the retention tabs back into place to secure the pans.
- Slide the A-coil back over the pan mounts and reattach the six screws. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws.
- Reinsert the A-coil into the air handler.
Conclusion
By carefully following the above steps, you can successfully configure the MRCOOL Universal Air Handler in a Horizontal Right position. Be sure to pay close attention to the positioning of the pans and the proper reconnection of all components to ensure optimal performance.
